What is the Oil Pastel "Smudge" method of creating art?
The Oil Pastel Smudge method in creating paintings like art, has a distinct style and look, working with oil pastels. The technique connecting art with math, causes one to look at the shapes, forms and movement in our world. Working with our own hand cut template and using our fingers to “smudge” and blend the oil pastels is how creating the distinct style and look are achieved.   Working with the template causes a hard edge on the paper, that moves to a soft feathery edge in the blending of 2, 3 or more oil pastel colors together.  To “Smudge” is easy to learn, once you understand the structure of the technique.   I have had many of my students tell me it is the first art that they have framed created in a class environment.   That says a lot right there!  Join the journey of creating a Smudge!

Who Invented the Oil Pastel Smudge method of art?
The Oil Pastel Smudge technique of creating unique recognizable art was invented by multi-talented award winning graphic artist/designer, illustrator Carol Foldvary-Anderson.  Her oil pastel smudge technique has honored her with several grants from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endownment for the Arts.  In 2018 Foldvary-Anderson had the opportunity to compete in the (AFCI) Association for Creative Industries “Ultimate Pitch” sponsored by Michael’s Crafts for the chance to win the prize of $10,000 to promote the work.  Even though she did not win the prise, Carol is still moving forward with her technique, receiving grant funding in 2022 to create several 20 minute videos of instruction.
When was the Oil Pastel Smudge method of art invented?
The invention of the technique took place roughly over a 40 year period of time and is still developing.  In the early1980s. Inventor, graphic artist/designer, illustrator Carol Foldvary-Anderson was always interested in technique when she viewed a work of art, how it was created, dissecting the elements and movement of the brush strokes and lines.  When driving down the street, when in nature, and in life, in general, she would view the scene in shapes, forms, light and color tones.  If she was able she would quick sketch the scene and label the seperate areas from dark to light. Number 1 would be darkest one to -whatever the emphasis of light and shadow.  Also at the time Foldvary-Anderson became a member of the Nevada Inventors Association, subscribed to several Gallery Magazines, and was teaching art medium/technique classes.  She was always thinking about and searching to find a professional look in painting that would suit her style, imagination and could be another class she could offer.  By this time, Carol had worked in about every medium, pen and ink, acrylic paints, colored pencils, watercolors but never oil paints. Carol was hired in a few print shops for her graphic abilities and several screen printing companies illustrating and cutting out screens for t-shirt designs.  Foldvary-Anderson’s personal style of art grew, with her paid working experiences.  Oil Pastel Smudge grew out of her preference to work fast, with immediate results.
“It is not only the time it takes to create the actual final piece of art, it is also the thought and processes ones mind go thought, the trials, experimentation and challenges.  It is in the activity of the doing, the steps taken in the development of the method, in which all art is created is what intrigues me and keeps me alive and alert to things around me!    I have always been fascinated in process and technique, in the development of anything manmade, art, music, architecture, literary works scientific discoveries, all starting out in the mind, created first, and then brought to light and fruition, by the doing!” states Carol Foldvary-Anderson  "The mind is full of magical possibilities and exquisite wonder!"
