No artist likes to hear, see, or deal with a “Smudge”.
Well, I have taken this poor rejected, isolated, lonely, self conscious, negative word, “Smudge”, and turned it around, given it a purpose, a new positive image, a function, and recognition in the art world.
Many who first see the work I am presenting think that it was created with watercolors, due to the light airy look, also suggested was the look of a silk painting. They are surprised to here the medium is oil pastel.
Yes, the medium is oil pastels, the “Smudge” is what I call the technique. I work from my own hand-cut templates, for the specific imagery I have in mind to create. Both positive and negative shapes, are the focus. I prefer to work in a limited color palette of 3-4 colors throughout the piece.
The chosen oil pastel colors are applied heavily to the edge, very edge, of the hard edge cut of the surface of the template paper shape. The oil pastel is then smudged, smeared or blended, on to the final surface.
I have worked with smooth non-tooth paper, a prepared piece of wood, even leather.
The blending of the colors is accomplished, with the smudging movement. As the pigments come to the end of the smudged motion, a light, and airy, feathery effect takes place. The directional flow of the colors smudged dictates the essence of the image/s desired to be achieved.
The blending and smudging of the oil pastels in this technique is both exciting, and challenging at the same time.
All of the works of art on the site are created with the use of Oil Pastels, and working with a template that myself and my students have drawn, cut, designed and created.
What takes place while working in the technique is the individuals development of cognitive, comprehensive, insightful, reasoning and thoughts, while creating something of beauty and learning math in an artistic way.
Oil Pastel Smudge is breaking down visual elements into their basic shapes and forms. Cutting and working the template where, either or, or both, the positive and negative shapes are able to be used.
